About this calculator

How it works

The bonus is a percentage of the wages you earned during the period the bonus covers, which normally runs from October 1 through September 30.

That percentage depends on employer size: larger employers apply a higher percentage than small ones. Only wages up to a cap are counted, and the resulting bonus has a maximum of its own.

There is a minimum number of hours worked during the period to qualify, and in the first year of employment the bonus is typically reduced by half.

Example

An employee who earned $8,000 during the period, worked 1,400 hours and works for a large employer: 6% of $8,000 is a $480 bonus.

Had the same person earned $45,000, only the first $10,000 counts (6% = $600), and $600 is also the maximum, so the bonus would be $600.

The bonus by wages in the period

Look at where the column stops. Past the countable wage cap the bonus stops rising, and that is behind most of the calls HR gets in December.

Wages in the periodLarge employerSmall employer
$5,000.00$300.00$150.00
$8,000.00$480.00$240.00
$10,000.00$600.00$300.00
$15,000.00$600.00$300.00
$25,000.00$600.00$300.00
$40,000.00$600.00$300.00

Notice where it stops: past the countable wage cap the bonus stops rising, so two people on very different salaries can receive the same amount. Assumes you meet the hours minimum and that it is not your first year.

Important limitations

  • This is an estimation tool, not a legal determination of whether a bonus is owed to you or how much.
  • The percentages, caps, hours minimum and first-year reduction are set by statute and have been amended before. The calculator shows them on screen and lets you change them, but verify the ones currently in force for your case.
  • Rules can vary with your hire date, employment classification, industry and any applicable collective bargaining agreement. Some employers and jobs are exempt or treated differently.
  • Confirm your situation with your employer or Puerto Rico's Department of Labor and Human Resources.
