Owning a car in Puerto Rico costs more than the monthly payment. There is the marbete, which is not one charge but four with different rules; fuel, which takes a fixed slice of the budget of anyone commuting daily; and financing, where the gap between 60 and 72 months is hundreds of dollars in interest.

It pays to add up the full annual cost before committing to a monthly payment: marbete, a year of fuel, maintenance and insurance. That total is usually well above the instalment, and it is the number that decides whether a car genuinely fits the budget.
