About this calculator
How it works
Each shift is converted to minutes from midnight. If the end time is at or before the start time, the calculator assumes the shift crossed midnight and adds 24 hours.
Worked time = scheduled time − break minutes.
Decimal hours divide minutes by 60, the format most payroll systems expect: 7 hours 30 minutes is 7.5.
Example
A 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM shift with a 30-minute break is 8 scheduled hours, 7 hours 30 minutes worked, or 7.5 decimal hours.
Important limitations
- It does not apply overtime rules automatically — use the overtime calculator for that.
- It assumes each shift is shorter than 24 hours.
- It does not replace your employer's official timekeeping system.
