About this calculator
How it works
Puerto Rico income tax is progressive: 0% up to $9,000 of taxable income, 7% up to $25,000, 14% up to $41,500, 25% up to $61,500 and 33% above $61,500.
Before applying the table, the personal exemption is subtracted ($3,500 single, $7,000 married filing jointly) plus $2,500 per dependent.
Federal payroll taxes (FICA) apply separately: 6.2% Social Security up to the annual wage base and 1.45% Medicare with no cap, plus an extra 0.9% above $200,000.
Example
On $40,000 gross, single with no dependents: taxable income is $36,500, PR income tax is about $2,730, Social Security $2,480 and Medicare $580. Estimated net is $34,210 per year — about $1,316 per biweekly paycheck.
The income tax brackets
Each band's rate applies only to the portion of your income that falls inside it. That is why a raise never leaves you earning less: the money below keeps paying what it paid.
| Net taxable income | Rate on that band |
|---|---|
| $0.00 – $9,000.00 | 0% |
| $9,000.00 – $25,000.00 | 7% |
| $25,000.00 – $41,500.00 | 14% |
| $41,500.00 – $61,500.00 | 25% |
| Over $61,500.00 | 33% |
The rate applies only to the portion of income inside that band, not to your whole salary. It is computed after exemptions are subtracted.
Important limitations
- This is an educational estimate: it excludes tax credits (like the Earned Income Credit), itemized deductions, retirement contributions, health plans and the gradual adjustment for high incomes.
- FICA figures match the configured tax year and change annually; your employer's actual withholding may differ.
- For your official return and withholding, consult a tax professional or the Departamento de Hacienda.
