About this calculator

How it works

Tip = bill × (percent ÷ 100). The total is the bill plus tip, and each person pays the total divided by the group size.

In the U.S. and Puerto Rico the norm is 15% for standard service, 18% for good service and 20% or more for excellent service.

Example

An $85.00 bill with an 18% tip: the tip is $15.30 and the total $100.30. Split 4 ways, each person pays $25.08.

Important limitations

  • Check whether the restaurant already added a service charge (common for large parties); extra tip is then optional.
  • The tip is computed on whatever total you enter; you decide whether to use the pre-tax subtotal or the receipt total.
  • The split is equal shares; it doesn't prorate different orders.
