About this calculator

The six modes

What is X% of Y: multiply Y by X ÷ 100. Handy for tips and discounts.

X is what percent of Y: divide X by Y and multiply by 100.

Percentage increase and decrease: compare a starting value with an ending value to express the change as a percent.

Add and remove percent: adding multiplies by (1 + p ÷ 100); removing divides by (1 + p ÷ 100), which is the correct move when the percentage is already baked into the total.

Example

15% of $60 is $9. If $60 rose to $75, that is a 25% increase. And if $75 already includes 15%, the value before that percentage was $65.22 — not $63.75.

Important limitations

  • Removing a percentage is not the same as subtracting it: you divide, not subtract.
  • Results are rounded to two decimals.
  • For Puerto Rico sales tax use the IVU calculator, which already has the rate configured.
