What the marbete costs, line by line
The marbete arrives as a single number, which is why almost nobody knows what it is made of. It is four line items with different rules, and two of them can be removed entirely depending on your situation. Knowing which ones changes what you pay.
License fees are no longer by weight
For years, license fees were calculated from the vehicle's weight, and plenty of people still believe that. Act 102-2022 changed it: private and public automobiles now pay forty-four dollars a year, the same for a small car and a family SUV.
Motorcycles pay less and commercial vehicles pay more. The weight scale survives only for heavy commercial cargo, above two tons, which is worked out by tonnage separately.
If someone tells you your SUV pays more marbete than a car because it is heavier, that information went stale years ago.
ACAA is your choice
ACAA is not a fixed charge handed to you: it is a coverage you select at renewal, with a basic option and two more expensive expanded ones. Many people pay whatever comes up by default without knowing there were alternatives.
It covers injuries in traffic accidents, and it is independent of your private policy. This is the point that confuses most: having private insurance does not exempt you from ACAA. That one is always paid, no exceptions.
The compulsory insurance can be removed
Compulsory liability insurance is the largest line on a personal car's marbete, and it is the only one you can remove completely.
If your private policy already covers liability, your insurer issues a voucher — a certification — and you skip the compulsory charge at renewal. The bill drops sharply.
The expensive mistake is not asking for it: if you carry a private policy and show up without the voucher, you pay twice for the same coverage. Ask your agent before you go; it usually takes one phone call.
Inspection and the exemption for new vehicles
Vehicles two years old or newer are exempt from inspection. If your car is new, that line does not appear and there is no station to visit.
For everyone else, the cost went up in February 2024: regular vehicles pay twenty dollars and diesel trucks forty. The difference is fuel type and the equipment the test requires, not body size, so a gasoline SUV pays the same as a sedan.
If yours expired
Renewing late carries surcharges. Here is something other pages will not tell you: public sources do not agree on how much. Some describe a charge that climbs in steps and others a flat amount plus a sum for each month overdue, and the gap widens the longer it goes.
So the calculator neither includes them nor guesses. If your marbete is expired, CESCO or Hacienda has the exact figure, and it is worth asking before you budget.
Beyond the surcharge, driving with an expired marbete is a traffic violation with its own fine. The two stack.
