Are solar panels worth it in Puerto Rico?
With expensive power and frequent outages, the question asks itself. The honest answer depends on your usage, your roof, and how much you value keeping the lights on when the rest of the street is dark.
Start with your usage, not the system
The most common mistake is starting with "how many panels do I need?". Start with your kWh: pull the monthly usage from the last 12 bills and average it.
That number sizes the system. A system larger than your usage produces energy that may not be credited at full value; one that's too small leaves your bill nearly unchanged.
Real production isn't the nameplate
A 5 kW system doesn't produce 5 kW all day. What it produces depends on effective sun hours, which already account for clouds, roof angle, shade from trees or buildings, and equipment losses.
A serious installer evaluates your specific roof. Be wary of anyone quoting a production figure without having looked at which way your roof faces.
Net metering and batteries are different things
Net metering credits your bill for energy you export to the grid. It's what makes the savings work, and its rules and credits can change — confirm current terms before signing.
Batteries are a separate decision. They don't improve savings: they keep your lights on when the grid goes down. In Puerto Rico that resilience is much of the real value, but it raises the cost and stretches the payback period.
Questions to ask before you sign
What annual production do you estimate for my specific roof, and based on what? What warranty covers the equipment, and what covers the installation? Who is responsible if the system underproduces?
If it's financed: what's the APR, the term and the total cost? A "no money down" system on a long loan can cost far more than it saves.
