Cuerda Converter
Type the amount, pick the unit, and see the equivalent in every other one straight away. The cuerda is the land measure used in Puerto Rico and almost nowhere else, so converters from off the island rarely include it.

The cuerda is a Puerto Rican unit: 100 varas by 100 varas. This converts it at 3,930.395 square metres per cuerda, the equivalence commonly used on the island. Because it is a customary measure, sources differ in the last decimal; for deeds and surveys always use the surveyor's figure.

About this calculator
What a cuerda is
A cuerda is a square of 100 varas by 100 varas. The vara is a Spanish measure that stayed in Puerto Rico after 1898, and the cuerda stayed with it: land here is still bought, inherited and divided in cuerdas.
In metric terms a cuerda is 3,930.395 square metres. In acres it is 0.9712 — a little under one acre. Close, but not the same, and the gap shows on a large parcel.
How this is calculated
Every conversion goes through square metres. Your amount is multiplied by the square metres its unit is worth, and that result is divided by the square metres of each of the others.
The other units are exact definitions: a hectare is 10,000 square metres, an acre is 4,046.8564224, and a square foot is 0.09290304. That makes the cuerda the only figure here with any room for argument.
Important limitations
- The cuerda is a customary measure, not a metric definition: sources differ in the last decimal. This uses 3,930.395 square metres, the equivalence commonly used on the island.
- For a deed, a survey or anything legal, the figure that counts is the surveyor's, not a converter's.
- This converts areas, not distances or perimeters.
